The "Hey Expo" voice assistant

Expo includes a voice assistant so you can get help while your hands are busy. Ask a cooking question out loud and Expo answers.

Using your voice while cooking

While you’re cooking, you can ask Expo things like:

• “What’s the next step?”
• “How much garlic do I need?”
• “What can I use instead of buttermilk?”

Expo responds out loud so you can keep your hands on the food.

Turn on “Hey Expo” on the Home screen

You can let Expo listen for the wake word on the Home screen so you can start hands-free without tapping anything:

1. Go to Settings.
2. Under Voice, turn on “Hey Expo” on Home.
3. Now, while you’re on the Home tab, say “Hey Expo” and ask your question.

This is off by default. The microphone is only active while you’re on the Home tab, and only when you’ve turned the setting on.

Tips

• Speak naturally; you don’t need exact phrasing.
• If Expo mishears the wake word in a noisy kitchen, try again a little more clearly.
• You can always tap through a recipe by hand instead — voice is an option, not a requirement.
